The Identity Shift That Changes Everything

Kirti Jagasia·16 April 2026·6 min read

You have tried to change a behaviour. You set up the system, you built the habit, you committed to the change. And for a while it worked. Then, slowly, it did not.

This is not a willpower problem. It is an identity problem.

We change our behaviour — temporarily — through motivation and discipline. We change it permanently only when the behaviour becomes consistent with who we believe we are. The person who is 'trying to exercise more' is on a different path from the person who thinks of themselves as someone who moves their body. The difference is not the action. It is the identity underneath it.

Why identity change is harder

Because it asks something deeper of us. It asks us to let go of a self-concept we may have held for years. To stop being 'someone who struggles with this' and to become 'someone who does that'. And our minds, which are extraordinarily good at keeping us consistent with our existing self-image, resist this.

The moment you claim a new identity, you will face evidence that contradicts it. You will have the bad day, the missed session, the old reaction. And your mind will say: see, you are not really this person. This is where most people give up.

How to actually shift

Start with the smallest possible action that is consistent with the identity you want to hold. Not the action that proves the transformation is complete — the action that proves it has begun.

Then, crucially, tell yourself the story. 'I am the kind of person who...' The story precedes the evidence, not the other way around. Identity is not something you discover. It is something you decide — and then act into until it becomes true.
