Morning Routines Are Not the Answer

Kirti Jagasia·2 April 2026·4 min read

There is a version of self-improvement culture that would have you believe the 5am alarm is the answer. That if you could just get the morning right — the meditation, the journalling, the cold shower, the protein — everything else would fall into place.

I have worked with women who have tried every iteration of this. Who have downloaded the apps, built the habit stacks, listened to every podcast about optimising the first hour of the day. And who still feel, underneath the routine, like something fundamental has not changed.

Because it has not. The routine was never the problem.

What morning routines cannot fix

A morning routine cannot fix a life that is misaligned with your values. It cannot resolve a relationship that is quietly draining you. It cannot compensate for work that has stopped meaning anything. It cannot replace the harder conversations you have been avoiding.

What it can do is give you a sense of control and intention in the first hour of your day. That is genuinely useful. But it is a foundation, not a solution. And treating it as a solution keeps you very busy not addressing the actual problem.

What actually drives lasting change

Clarity about what you want and why. Without this, any system — however well-designed — is just structure in the service of nothing in particular.

Honest accounting of what is not working. Not the symptoms ('I feel scattered, I feel unmotivated') but the source. What is the life trying to tell you? What are you not looking at?

Small, consistent action towards something that matters. Not a perfect routine. A real direction.

The mornings matter. But only if what you are building towards matters first.
